In 1886, as in the major Italian and European cities, spiritualism fever was sweeping Naples. It wasn't just a bourgeois fad, but a challenge that intrigued brilliant minds in the fields of literature, art, and science (including eminent physicians). The scene was dominated by a young medium, Eusapia Palladino; and the long lines at her séances were regularly divided into two camps: those who believed and those who didn't, those who applauded and those who smiled. Roberto Bracco, who belonged to the second group, decided to chronicle Neapolitan spiritualism in a pamphlet that sold 150,000 copies in a few days, but also attracted the ire and sensitivity of many. Twenty years later, a publisher reconstructed the incredible story — with a brilliant left-handed shot pulled by Bracco — adding details, documents, and new accounts of those sessions that had "bewitched" Naples in those magical and confusing days. Introduction by Francesco Palmieri.
