It could be the largest metropolitan area in Italy, but instead it's merely an immense medina that squeezes and crushes Naples. From the "crown of thorns" of a metropolitan belt stretching from San Pietro to Patierno and Secondigliano, welded to Casavatore, Casoria, and Arzano, to the desolate provincial roads that run toward the Frattense area, or on the other side toward Nola; along highways that intersect the futuristic Afragola station and the waste-to-energy plant, amid the Acerra marshes, the industries and high-rises of Caivano; through abandoned countryside, where concrete has choked the Regi Lagni and distorted the Sebeto Valley. How many places, how many stories, how many people, and curiosities and mysteries, does the great metropolitan area in the shadow of Vesuvius hide? And while it's not easy to outline a comprehensive and systematic framework, perhaps it's still worth trying to rekindle a debate on the sleepy province of Southern Italy's largest city.
