In the heart of the 17th century, a young orphan grows up in an era marked by violence and turmoil, and his talent for painting soon leads him to challenge the rigid artistic conventions of the time. Rebellious and enterprising, Salvator Rosa frequents the workshops of great masters such as Lo Spagnoletto and Aniello Falcone. Between intense love affairs, intrigues, alliances, and losses, his life is marked by conflict and ambiguity, which are reflected in the works in which he explores the beauty and pain of the world. When his connection with Naples crumbles, he sets out in search of another place that can understand his vision. In his final days, ill and bedridden, he relives the most intense moments of his life, which his son Augusto will later paint an intimate and tormented portrait of in a series of letters. In a climate of perpetual instability, between ecclesiastical censorship and the cynicism of the powerful, Salvator Rosa is not only a restless artist, but a man struggling with the conventions of the century that attempt to suffocate him.
