Artemisia Gentileschi (c. 1593–1653) was the first woman admitted to the Academy of Drawing in Florence and was destined to become a prominent European painter. This novel, loosely based on her life, explores two key moments in that exceptional yet tormented artistic and private life: her youth in Rome, marked by a rape followed by a public trial and then a loveless marriage; and her mature years in Naples, mid-century, when, having achieved success, Artemisia retraces her life and searches for herself, beyond the artist, the wife, the mother, the woman. The novel thus offers us a rich and complex portrait of a female figure of extraordinary value, set against the backdrop of two vibrant and feral Baroque cities, Rome and Naples.
