Due to the popularity of his characters, the notoriety of his adventurous life, and his omnipresence in the press, Dumas was among the most caricatured artistic and literary figures of the nineteenth century. Italy, and Naples in particular, did not escape this new craze for comic journalism; journalists unleashed their pens and pencils against the famous French novelist, helping to magnify the legend of his character. The texts and vignettes collected in this excursus are the result of research into numerous humorous periodicals from 1860-65, the height of Dumas's Garibaldi adventure and his stay in Naples associated with his journalistic endeavor for "L'Indipendente." They offer, in addition to key historical fragments of Italian unification, a flavorful biography in pictures of the author of "The Count of Monte Cristo."
