Shelley Mary

Daughter of the feminist philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft and the radical thinker William Godwin, Mary Shelley was raised in an environment of intense intellectual ferment. Her life was defined by her romantic and creative partnership with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, with whom she fled to Europe, defying the social conventions of the time.

Her name is inextricably linked to Frankenstein (1818), a masterpiece conceived at just nineteen years old during a literary challenge at Villa Diodati. With this work, Mary not only birthed the modern myth of the scientist challenging nature but also laid the foundations for modern science fiction.

Despite facing profound family tragedies, she pursued a prolific career, writing historical and dystopian novels (such as The Last Man) and editing her husband’s literary legacy, establishing herself as one of the deepest and most complex voices of English Romanticism.
