Better known by his noble title of Duque de Rivas, he was born in Cordoba in 1791 and died in Madrid in 1865. A Spanish poet, playwright and historian, he was one of the protagonists of the Romantic movement, author of the play Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino (1835) which made him famous. In 1844 he was sent as ambassador to Naples, and during his stay in the Neapolitan city he wrote the story Viaje al Vesubio, collecting the impressions of his trip to Vesuvius.
